Digital Art Technology and Cultural Heritage Conservation Applications – Digital Technology X LiDAR Scanning Workshop
Professor Libby Chan and Dr. Patrick Ke delivered a lecture and facilitated hands-on session for secondary school teachers, training them in real-time application of 3D scanning technology. The workshop aimed to enhance teachers’ understanding of digital technology’s role in preserving historical cultural heritage, thereby supporting their teaching practices.

HKSYU and Antiquities Office Host 3D Dinosaur Fossil Workshop
The Antiquities and Monuments Office and Hong Kong Shue Yan University co-hosted a workshop using 3D scanning technology in paleontological research.
Assistant Professors Ke Pingchuan and Cai Shengdan from the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University introduced the use of digital technology in paleontology and cultural heritage preservation. The Antiquities and Monuments Office arranged for participants to scan dinosaur fossils excavated at Port Island under expert guidance, providing a great opportunity to learn about new technologies and view fossils up close.

3D Scanning Workshop for Secondary School Students
Our staff will provide a live demonstration of 3D scanning and share some techniques with participants. Participants will then have the opportunity to try scanning objects themselves. In addition, students will learn about the essential concepts involved in 3D printing.

Cheung Chau Jiao Festival (Tai Ping Ching Chiu)
As one of Hong Kong’s most iconic traditional festivals, Cheung Chau Jiao Festival (Tai Ping Ching Chiu) has been inscribed on China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. To preserve this unique cultural treasure, we have adopted advanced equipment and technologies from the Digital Imaging Laboratory (DIL) to carry out systematic digital heritage conservation.
Utilizing high-precision 3D scanning, 4K ultra-high-definition imaging, and immersive VR recording, we conduct comprehensive digital documentation of the festival’s core rituals—such as the float parade and bun scrambling competition—as well as its traditional costumes, ritual objects, and craftsmanship. These technologies not only capture the event’s details and atmosphere with precision but also build an interactive digital archive, laying a solid foundation for cultural research, educational dissemination, and intergenerational inheritance.
Empowered by DIL’s equipment, the cultural memory of Cheung Chau Jiao Festival will transcend temporal and spatial boundaries, enduring in vivid digital form and allowing this unique folk wisdom to thrive in the digital age.
